An obstetrician (OB) specializes in providing medical care before, during and after childbirth. Although you may not see your specific OB for every prenatal visit, it’s important to find one you’re comfortable with. This can alleviate any anxiety you might have about the process.
The Importance of Referrals
Referrals, either by word of mouth or online, provide powerful insights into the processes of specific healthcare providers. There is so much to think about when you’re expecting, that you might overlook things like bedside manner or clinic cleanliness. Referrals and feedback can raise red flags, or give you peace of mind. If you’re under the care of an OB/GYN Service, you may want to stay with another doctor at the same provider
The journey through pregnancy can be filled with uncertainty, but a good OB should alleviate much of that fear!
1) Speak With Your Insurance Provider
Childbirth can be an expensive business. It’s important to check with your insurance provider to minimize out of pocket expenses. This can also help you narrow the field based on proximity and specialties.
2) Make a List
Make a list of everything that’s important to you. Would you prefer a male or female obstetrician? What level of control or input would you like to have? These questions should be addressed in a list that you can take with you to initial consultations with doctors you’re considering.
3) Schedule a Meeting
An in-person meeting is the best way to gauge your comfort level with the obstetrician. Additionally, going to their office gives insight into their staff, practices and wait times. Consider drive time, traffic patterns and how busy the office seems. A great obstetrician might be worth a commute, but if they seem rushed or busy, you may not be getting the attention you and your child deserve.
4) Discuss Your Birth Plan
If you find yourself in a situation where you need to make a quick decision, your doctor should be there to back you up. Discuss your birth plan with your obstetrician and be clear about what’s important to you. Obviously, there may be instances in which the plan must be altered, but generally speaking, your doctor should prioritize your wishes.
5) Consider Any Health Risks
If you are predisposed to any significant health risks, you may want an obstetrician that specializes in similar conditions. Chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, epilepsy, heart disease or previous prenatal complications may require special care.
6) Inquire About Previous Complications
You may be curious about the number of complications your obstetrician encountered and how they’ve handled them. For example, what was their rate of c-sections last year? How many episiotomies did they have to perform? If the c-section rate seems high, ask them why. Don’t feel embarrassed or rude asking a health care provider lots of questions.
How to Choose an Obstetrician That’s Right For You
Once you’ve chosen your obstetrician, it’s important that you feel comfortable talking to them. You should have confidence in their judgment, advice, and abilities. Raising issues or questions about your body and your baby should come naturally and without embarrassment. The journey through pregnancy can be filled with uncertainty, but a good OB should alleviate much of that fear!
