Many of us are wondering if it is still required to wear a mask now that vaccines are freely available. Are they really necessary if you are vaccinated? If so, what type of masks are acceptable, and where do we need to wear them? Let’s dive into the answers to these questions together.
The short answer is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages people to continue to wear masks when they are in public indoor places. This is because as of right now, the best way we have to slow the spread of COVID-19 is to get vaccinated, wash your hands, don’t touch your face and nose, and mask up when indoors.
Wearing a mask becomes even more important for those who are unvaccinated because they don’t have the additional protection the COVID-19 vaccine offers.

Unvaccinated vs Vaccinated
One of the biggest questions most of us have is do we still have to wear a mask if er are fully vaccinated? While the vaccines greatly decrease the risk of contracting and spreading the COVID-19 virus, it is still possible to have a breakthrough infection. Many times these infections are so mild we do not suspect it is COVID. Because of this, it is still important to wear a mask when indoors to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
This is especially important for the safety of unvaccinated people, and those who cannot get the vaccine because of pre-existing health problems. Wearing face masks when in close contact with others is our strongest tool to protect those of us who are more at risk for COVID.
Where Do I Need to Wear It?
People only need to wear masks when they are in public indoor spaces. In general, you do not need to wear a mask in outdoor settings. The only time it would be advisable to wear a mask outside is if you are in a crowded outdoor setting where social distancing is not possible. When traveling it is required to wear a mask in airports and train stations.
What Kind of Mask?
What kind of mask are you supposed to wear? According to the CDC, some masks are more effective than others. People should wear masks that have two or more breathable layers, and fit snugly over the face. Some masks you should avoid have exhalation valves because these types of masks let in virus particles. Most people also should not wear surgical masks as these should be reserved for medical professionals.
Stay Healthy
Masks are still very important for our everyday lives. The CDC recommends wearing masks in public indoor spaces to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
