As COVID has become a more prominent fixture in our everyday lives, the question of what types of COVID tests are out there comes up. What can the public get their hands on right now?
There are two main types of COVID viral tests: laboratory tests, and self rapid tests. Lab tests normally take longer, but they look for the presence of a specific genetic material in any pathogen, so they tend to be more accurate.
Rapid at-home tests look at a specific antigen as well as some Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAATs). It is important to get tested when you suspect you have a case of COVID-19, using one of these methods.

Two Types of Tests
As we said, there are two main tests for determining if you have COVID. These are called viral tests and are different than antibody tests because they are looking for the live genetic material of the virus.
For some, lab tests are more accurate and practical because it allows you to be certain of the diagnosis. That is why PHC offers COVID tests to our community. For others, it may be more convenient to use a self rapid test at home.
When to Get Tested
Getting tested is important when you have been exposed to COVID, or when you are feeling symptoms of the virus. After that, follow the CDC’s guidelines for quarantining, and for social distancing. To find the CDC’s updated guidelines, follow this link.
